In partnership with Ava Stewart, an inspiring and passionate 9th grader at Marvin Ridge High School, Lydia’s Legacy presents “Teens Go Teal!” This unique program aims to educate girls, boys and their parents about ovarian and cervical cancers. The program focuses on cancer prevention including: HPV vaccination, genetic factors and knowing your family history. The program also gives perspective on living with cancer, and allows the attendees to participate in community service projects to help patients in need and a social media simulation to practice messages to raise awareness about the symptoms of these women’s cancers. Presenters include: advocates, caregivers, cancer survivors, and healthcare providers and the session length is ~2 hours.

Thursday, September 14, 2017:
A FREE Ovarian Cancer Education Program sponsored by Tesaro, Inc. for patients, survivors and loved ones. Attendees heard both a patient and healthcare provider perspective and received the latest information about ovarian cancer. Event was held at the Charlotte Marriott Southpark (2200 Rexford Rd., Charlotte, NC 28211).
Saturday, September 30, 2017:
Lydia’s Legacy hosted a table at the 2nd annual Community Empowerment Fair hosted by the Genesis Charitable Fund for Disaster Relief. The Fair provides free information and resources to the Beatties Ford Road corridor and the surrounding community that will foster a significant positive impact through Family Services support, Youth Engagement, and Community Action.
Saturday, January 14, 2017:
In partnership with Ava Stewart, an inspiring and passionate 8th grader at Marvin Ridge Middle School, Lydia’s Legacy presented “Teens Go Teal!” Dr. Erin Crane, Gynecologic Oncologist at Levine Cancer Institute and member of our Medical Advisory Team presented information to teenage girls and their moms about female anatomy, cancer, and prevention. The girls also participated in activity stations and interacted with several local survivors of gynecologic cancers. It was a fun, inspiring and educational day for everyone!
Past 2016 Events:
Lydia’s Legacy presented “What’s Up Down There?” – an interactive workshop about gynecologic cancers – to the students at Johnson & Wales University in September. Presenters of this multi-media workshop included Dr. Wendel Naumann, Gynecologic Oncologist at Levine Cancer Institute and member of our Medical Advisory Team, Cece Krelitz, ovarian cancer survivor, Karen Hiney, Director of Health Services at JWU, Keesha Carter, cervical cancer survivor, and Sarah Noonan, ovarian cancer survivor. Lydia’s Legacy joined several community partners and hosted a table at the Community Empowerment Fair hosted by Friendship Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday, September 3rd. We talked to dozens of women (and even a few men) about gynecologic cancers. Visitors participated in an interactive quiz with our volunteers…we heard comments such as “I never knew that!” and “I learned something new today!” and “I will definitely share this information with my daughter and wife!” We are so thankful to our volunteers for making a difference in the north Charlotte community.
Lydia’s Legacy, together with Dr. Erin Crane (Gynecologic Oncologist at Levine Cancer Institute and member of our Medical Advisory Team) participated in workshops at the Women’s Legacy Conference on Saturday, June 25th. We educated female members of Nations Ford Community Church about gynecologic cancers and the importance of knowing your body, advocating for yourself and supporting gynecologic cancer research.
Lydia’s Legacy was recognized as the charity of the month in May by the Women’s Heartlink Network of Charlotte. We had the opportunity to share our mission and educate women about gynecologic cancers with more than 30 of their members.
On Friday, May 27th, we educated a group of young ladies at Dorothy Wallace COPE Center for teen mothers. The home economics class made decorative tea pouches for our support kits and held a tea party in our honor. We are grateful for the opportunity to educate girls and young women about gynecologic cancers.
On Sunday, April 24th, Lydia’s Legacy hosted a table at the 3rd Annual Carolina Veterans Welcome Home Resource Expo. Our volunteers had the opportunity to share information with more than 100 veterans and their families about our organization and about gynecologic cancers.
On Tuesday, March 24th, Lydia’s Legacy hosted a “Gynecologic Cancer 101” session for members of the Junior League of Charlotte. Speakers included Dr. Robert Higgins, Gynecologic Oncologist at Levine Cancer Institute; Christine Nelson Sperow of WBTV/Junior League of Charlotte; Carin Ross Johnson, Founder of Lydia’s Legacy; and Sarah Noonan, ovarian cancer survivor and Community Programs Manager of Lydia’s Legacy. More than 20 women participated in this event. Special thanks to Levine Cancer Institute for providing a great facility!
On Wednesday, January 27th, Lydia’s Legacy hosted our first Cervical Cancer Education Workshop. Guest speakers included Dr. Wendel Naumann, Gynecologic Oncologist at the Levine Cancer Institute in Charlotte, along with Jane Fitch and Keesha Carter (cervical cancer survivors). This workshop was sponsored by Carolinas HealthCare System/Levine Cancer Institute and was presented in partnership with the Charlotte Chapter of the National Cervical Cancer Coalition, Serenity, Courage & Wisdom, Inc. and the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (North Carolina and Mecklenburg County Department of Health). We welcomed more than 20 participants and enjoyed a fun and educational evening!
